Orange Tree Resort
Scottsdale, AZ
October 13 - 14, 2006

This short tour (100 miles total) began in Gilbert along the Sun Circle Trail, north to Tempe, past ASU, then along the north bank of the Tempe Lake trail.  Along the trail is some interesting artwork.  The mosaic shown here runs the length of this wall (about 50 feet).
Check out the slideshow for more pictures of this wall and the entire tour.

We passed through Eldorado Park in Scottsdale (part of the Indian Bend Wash greenbelt) and stopped at the Wedge Skatepark.  It's hard to tell, but the boy in this picture is airborne.

We arrived at the Orange Tree Golf Resort in the early afternoon.  Here's a picture of Tom in our suite, doing something important at the sink.  This is a beautiful resort for golfers and non-golfers alike.

Departure on Saturday morning was somewhat delayed due to heavy rains.  We were on the road at about 11:30 AM where we connected with a mix of Greenbelt Pathways and low traffic bicycle routes until we came to the bikepath along SR 51.  You can see the aftermath of the rains along this path.  We had to walk our bikes a time or two to avoid the flooding.

This picture was taken a couple hours later, along the Thunderbird Park Paseo in Glendale.  What you are looking at here is part of a drainage plan designed to prevent flooding and preserve water.  Click here for more information.

Here we passed through the Loma Vista neighborhood in Phoenix.
We weren't sure what to make of this big clay pot with a painting of what looks like a junkyard on it,
but the park itself was really quite pretty.

We made our way on to the Grand Canal, but we didn't find as grand as the Arizona canal, as there were a lot of street crossings and the neighborhoods were a bit unsavory.  We had to detour off of the Grand when we were challanged by a pack of feral dogs (for real).  So, we ended up taking Washington Street which was under construction, due to the Light Rail.  This was a treat because there was no traffic, plus we got to see the Light Rail construction up close, as you will in the picture below.

The picture below was not taken as part of our tour, but was from the following day, at the Botanical Garden in Phoenix.
This little guy was about three inches long.  :-)
